Damascus Middle School Gives to Others
During this holiday season, Damascus Middle School students, faculty, and staff participated in several activities to give gifts to others who are not as fortunate as we are. During the month of October, we voted with money in the Beard-Grower contest, a contest in which we chose which male staff member we most wanted to grow a beard! Mr. Joe Preston, sixth-grade teacher, was the winner of this contest, and he has enjoyed having some extra time each day, thanks to not having to shave for two months! The money collected in this contest was used to purchase Christmas gifts for needy children in our community.
Wes’ Wish: Piles of Smiles for a Child with Cancer Toy Drive is an annual fundraiser begun by Wes Pak, a child who battled cancer himself and wishes to help children who are cancer patients at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia. DMS’s SRO Cody Johnson delivered four boxes filled with toys and other items we collected for Wes’s Wish. Sixth-grade teacher Mrs. Donna Musick challenged DMS students to participate in the St. Jude Math-a-Thon. Participants raised $415 to support St. Jude Children’s Hospital’s free medical care for children suffering from life-threatening illnesses and research to benefit sick children world-wide. Each of these activities served to remind us of the gift of being able to give to others.
