Damascus Middle School Honors Veterans
On Friday, November 9, Damascus Middle School hosted a Veterans Assembly and Luncheon to honor family members of our students, faculty, and staff who have served in the armed forces. Members of the Student Cooperative Association (SCA) Bailey W., Gabe F., Landon S., and Mia T. led the ceremony, which included songs performed by our seventh/eighth-grade choir directed by Mrs. Sue Spirup and a beautiful slideshow tribute to our veterans created by Mrs. Wendy Cole. Guest speaker Sgt. 1st Class Dean Roark shared memories of his time as a Green Beret, traveling around the world as he served our country. He encouraged students to consider a career in the military, saying that “[the military] will give you a whole lot more than you ever give it.” The assembly concluded with a moment of silence to honor those who gave “the ultimate sacrifice” and “Taps” played by student Cameron B. and band director Mr. Logan Childress. At the conclusion of the program, veterans were invited to join students in the cafeteria for lunch. As SCA President Bailey W. stated, “We at Damascus Middle School were humbled to be able to honor our veterans.” Mr. Joe Preston coordinated this moving tribute to our veterans.
