Damascus Middle School Recognizes Excellent Attendance
Damascus Middle School has focused on improving student attendance this year to meet new state accreditation guidelines. The DMS News Crew created a western-themed public service announcement to encourage students to be here on time daily. Local businesses, including Abingdon Cinemall, Chick-Fil-A, Dairy Queen, Damascus Bakery, Damascus Diner, Damascus Pool, Marquee Cinemas, Pizza Inn, Steak & Shake, Walmart, and WJC Federal Credit Union, as well as the Holston High Athletic Department, have provided overwhelming support as we sought incentives to motivate our students. The month of September was Attendance Awareness Month. Seventh-grader Hyder F. was the winner of our September drawing for students with perfect attendance, winning two free tickets to the Holston High School Homecoming football game. Ms. Sinclair’s homeroom was the class winner for the highest attendance during the month and received incentive time outside.
On Thursday, October 11, students gathered in the gym for our first quarter incentive prize drawings. Of the 217 students at DMS, 104 students had perfect attendance, and 172 had missed two or fewer days during the first quarter! These students were entered into a drawing for a total of twenty-nine prizes, ranging from free Chick-Fil-A meals, to a $10 Walmart gift card, to middle school sports passes, to Cinemall movie tickets. The following students were rewarded for their excellent attendance: Alyssa B., Caleb C., Grace C., Kaylie C., James D., Brady D., CJ F., Gabe F., Jerry F., Emily H., Claire H., Raygan J., Monica L., Eva M., Trenton M., Mikayla M., Maya O., Israel P., Lily P., Brack S., Brady S., Ashley S., Nick T., Noah T., Skylar W., Addie W., Bailey W., Ryan W., and Colton W. All students with perfect attendance for first quarter received a Dairy Queen coupon for a free blizzard! In addition to these rewards, our focus on improved attendance should return high rewards in terms of academics!
