Damascus Middle School Sixth-Grade Students Enjoy Field Trips

On November 22, the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center conducted its 14th Annual Stem Workshops for sixth-grade girls. The goal is to introduce girls to the STEM fields and to encourage them to advance in these fields as they progress throughout their academic years. Each student attended three sessions over the course of the day. Additionally, they attended the keynote presentation of Patrice Banks, engineer and “sheCANic” (aka automotive technician). Banks is the founder and CEO of Girls Auto Clinic, a female empowerment business located near Philadelphia.  While the girls were busy learning about STEM topics, the boys were visiting the Museum of the Middle Appalachians in Saltville, where they learned about the natural history of our area.    Both groups learned a lot from their experiences, whether looking toward the future or back in time!
