Damascus Middle School Students View the Solar Eclipse

On Monday, August 21, Damascus Middle School students viewed the solar eclipse, either live or live-streamed from the NASA website.  Classes had prepared for this event through conducting research about solar eclipses, reading stories related to solar eclipses, and building pinhole camera devices from cereal boxes.  Excitement filled the air throughout the day, as students awaited their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view a solar eclipse.  Mrs. Donna Musick’s sixth-grade science students even enjoyed themed snacks of Moon Pies and Sunny D.’s during their eclipse-viewing party!  After the experience ended, students discussed their reactions.  Many students were surprised that it didn’t get as dark outside as they had expected, and most were amazed by the sudden drop in temperature.  Regardless of their immediate reactions, one thing is certain.  The memory of viewing this solar eclipse with their peers at Damascus Middle School will stay with them for their lifetimes!
