The DMS FFA Chapter Volunteers at the Damascus Food Bank

For the December club day at Damascus Middle School, the DMS FFA (Future Farmers of America) Chapter decided to spend an hour volunteering at the local Food Bank in Damascus. The food bank is run by One Way Ministries in Damascus, and with luck, they were unloading the weekly delivery from the Feeding America Food Bank in Abingdon.  Some of the FFA members, Abby P., Shaylee M., Matthew B., Matthew S., and Levi S., along with high schooler Maddie M., unloaded and sorted food in the food bank to be distributed next week during the monthly handout. A huge part of the FFA is service back to the community, and the DMS FFA chapter has focused on giving back this year.

Students learned that the Food Bank in Damascus feeds over 200 families in the Damascus area.  Another really neat aspect of One Way's food bank is that all the funding for the food bank comes from the It's a God Thing Thrift Store located on Main Street. The thrift store is also sponsored and run by volunteers at One Way Ministries and gives the Food Bank a $1000 monthly budget to purchase food to hand out to those in need.  "I enjoyed helping them help others. I enjoyed seeing how they (the food bank) help those in need," Matthew B., the DMS FFA President, said about the experience.
