DMS FFA Participates in Livestock Judging
On Tuesday, September 12, the Damascus Middle School FFA (Future Farmers of America) participated in the annual area livestock judging at the Washington County Fairgrounds. The team is sponsored by Mrs. Mary Rhudy and consisted of the following members: Madison B., Dillon B., Raelin B., Emily G., Skye H., Cara J., Maggie M., Noah S., Dustin S., and Megan T. The team had to use a set criteria to evaluate lambs and heifers. Market lambs are lambs destined to become our next meal, and these students had to distinguish which lamb would have the best carcass of meat out of four choices. This skill is very difficult to learn and accomplish since the animals are all different. The students then had to compare heifers, young female calves, to determine which animal would be the best production animal in the future. The team did a great job in these difficult tasks!
