DMS Seventh-grade Science Students Explore Genetics

Students in Mrs. Amy Caywood’s seventh-grade science classes have been studying genetics, specifically how “organisms reproduce and transmit genetic information to new generations” (LS 12 SOL).   After covering genes and chromosomes, phenotypes and genotypes, and characteristics that can be inherited, students were placed in groups and given the opportunity to “design a kid.”  Traits were determined based on the toss of a coin, with heads representing the dominant allele and tails representing the recessive allele.  When groups finished selecting characteristics, they illustrated their children using a template.  This was an exciting way for students to explore how genetics controls our features!
