DMS Seventh-Grader Wins DAR Essay Contest

Maggie M., a student at Damascus Middle School, was selected as the 2017-2018 seventh-grade winner of the Black’s Fort Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) American History Essay Contest. Since this year is the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, the topic asked students to imagine they were living in 1918 and to describe the impact of the war on their current and future life.  Maggie chose to write her essay from the perspective of a young girl whose father leaves their home in the United States to serve in the war.  Maggie shares the narrator’s fears and the relief she feels when her father returns home safely.  Maggie says that she chose this perspective because she could imagine how she would feel if her own father had to serve in a war.  Congratulations to Maggie, who will be honored at a special award ceremony in March!
