Mrs. Valerie Cox Chosen as Damascus Middle School Teacher of the Year

Damascus Middle School is proud to announce that Mrs. Valerie Cox has been selected as the 2016-17 DMS Teacher of the Year.  Mrs. Cox has been in the education field for 19 years and the library media specialist and technology coordinator at DMS for the past three years.  Prior to coming to DMS, Mrs. Cox served as the library media specialist at Greendale Elementary for 9 years.

Described by her students as “patient”, “kind”, “brilliant”, “understanding”, and “just awesome”, it’s no surprise that the library at DMS is a busy place, filled with students who look forward to the opportunity to see and talk to Mrs. Cox.  During her daily library classes, Mrs. Cox and her students read and discuss interesting novels, as well as research and make presentations on current issues using the most up to date technology.  Mrs. Cox also aids students in choosing reading material that is not only interesting to them, but also challenges them.  Mrs. Cox makes sure that every student who enters the library feels comfortable asking for help when they need it, as well as empowers them to not be afraid to try new things.  She equips students with the tools that they need to succeed in the classroom as well as in life. Mrs. Cox says that her instructional goal for all of her students is “that they are able to not only learn strategies for reading and comprehending a text and become adept at library and information literacy skills in our weekly library class, but that they also learn how to unlearn and relearn.  With this skill, students will be lifelong learners and problem-solvers in our world.”

Mrs. Cox also serves DMS as the technology coordinator and supervisor of the morning news crew.  She is also an invaluable partner to the teachers at DMS.  She is always willing to share the library with teachers to do research and projects.  She is quick to share professional information with teachers and is the go-to person when anyone is having computer or technology issues.  Mrs. Cox has made the library at DMS a hub of activity and learning that is enjoyed by both teachers and students.

Mrs. Cox states that she wants to “share my own love for reading and research with my students, helping them to see the endless opportunities available to them through the written and spoken word.”  If you ask the students and teachers at Damascus Middle School, she succeeds at doing this every day!  Congratulations to DMS Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Valerie Cox.
