Damascus Middle School Welcomes New Faces

Mr. Jared Miller graduated in 2006 from Honaker High School. He then attended Southwest Virginia Community College and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration in 2009. After working for a bank from 2009 to 2011 and then in coal mining for about three years, he went back to college at King University. He received a Bachelor's degree in History and Secondary Education in December of 2015 and began teaching for Russell County Public Schools in 2016. During his six years with Russell County Public Schools, he earned his Computer Repair Technician Certificate and taught various technology and business classes, including Dual Enrollment CyberSecurity classes through Southwest Virginia Community College. In the spring of 2022, he accepted a teaching position here with Washington County Public Schools and will split his time between GSMS and DMS. He enjoys technology, exercising, mountain biking, snowboarding, radio controlled cars, the lake, motorcycles, and spending time with his son and girlfriend.

Miss Megan Mitten graduated from Emory & Henry College with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education and a minor in Art. She then completed her Master's of Education in Professional Studies. Since graduating, Miss Mitten has had the opportunity to share her passion for teaching with students in Smyth County as an elementary art teacher. Miss Mitten is looking forward to getting back into teaching music and choir at Holston High School and Damascus Middle School and cannot wait to meet all of her awesome students!

Mr. James “Rabbit” Sullivan grew up in Damascus and attended Holston High School. He is married with two adult children. Before coming to Damascus Middle School, he was the day-time custodian at Abingdon Elementary School. He is not entirely new to our school, as he is the middle school boys basketball coach here and is the varsity assistant baseball coach at Holston High School, where he has coached for over twenty years. 

Principal Kevin Worley grew up in Bristol, VA, and graduated from Virginia High School in 2003. From 2003-2009, Mr. Worley attended Emory & Henry College as a student-athlete where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degree. At Emory & Henry, Mr. Worley served as a captain on the football team and was a member of the Blue Key National Honor Society. Prior to becoming an administrator, Mr. Worley taught at Sullivan East High School and coached varsity football and wrestling for seven years  In 2016, Mr. Worley earned his Educational Specialist degree in Instructional Leadership from Lincoln Memorial University. In 2017, Mr. Worley began his administrative career as an Assistant Principal at Ketron Elementary School. In 2018, Mr. Worley moved to John S. Battle High School where he served as the Assistant Principal for four years. Mr. Worley is married and has a 5-year-old son who started kindergarten this year. In his free time, Mr. Worley enjoys spending time with his family, going to the lake, riding mountain bikes, snowboarding, fishing, and training and competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Mr. Chris Largen is the new World Geography teacher at DMS. He graduated with a B.A. in History and Social Sciences from Emory and Henry College in May 2022. His favorite hobbies are playing golf and watching college football. He is looking forward to working with the students and faculty at DMS! We are looking forward to having all of our new staff as part of the DMS family!
