DMS Sixth-Grade Music Students Learn to Play Ukulele

As part of the sixth-grade general music curriculum at Damascus Middle School this year, students are given the opportunity to learn ukulele. In their study of the ukulele, students explore pitch and melody as well as beginning chord structure and progressions as they experiment with learning a new instrument. To culminate their studies, students perform a song of their choice, applying their knowledge of rhythms, pitch, and other elements of music to create a musical performance. Chorus teacher Ms. Megan Mitten invited the DMS News to record a clip from their performance of “Counting Stars” for the morning news show. Their performance definitely demonstrates the joy that music can bring to our lives!
