Mr. Joe Preston welcomed our guests, and eighth-grader Ethan Forrester led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Special music was provided by Mrs. Rhonda Mossholder, who sang “The Star Spangled Banner,” and Levi Parks, who played “Taps.” We were honored to have United States Marine Corps-Reserve Gunnery Sergeant Clayton Potter as our guest speaker. Gunnery Sergeant Potter was introduced by students Payton Long and Lydia Reid, who shared Gunnery Sergeant Potter’s military background, as well as his civilian position as a School Resource Officer in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Gunnery Sergeant Potter spoke about the opportunities his military service had provided for him and gave our students time to ask questions. The program concluded with comments by Principal Kevin Worley and a slideshow of photographs of veterans from DMS families, created by Civics teacher Mrs. Wendy Cole. Veterans in attendance were invited to eat lunch in the DMS cafeteria when the program ended. Damascus Middle School extends a special thanks to Food City and Mr. Lawrence Cox at Holston High School for flowers for this event.
