Experiential Learning 🄾: Students in Mrs. Blackburn, Mrs. Lopez, and Ms. Moss’s English 7 classes headed out on the Appalachian Trail to ā€œhike their own hikeā€ after reading Kimberly Brubaker Bradley’s novel Halfway to the Sky. The day was perfect! It began with trail stories from former thru-hiker Jim Harrison, a bit of trail magic (freeze-dried Skittles) provided by Mrs. Debbie Anderson, and the view of our hometown from 300 feet above. Mr. Brandon Dale shared the ABC’s of packing your backpack for a hike, and Coach Michael Ratliff demonstrated how to build a fire. The day continued with a picnic in the Damascus Town Park, a visit to the Damascus Trail Center, mixing up some GORP (trail mix), reflecting on the hike in a hiking log book, and rock painting. Students learned so many things! Most of the students had never taken one step on the AT until this day. In the novel, the main character Dani notes as she takes her first step, ā€œit takes five million steps to walk the Appalachian Trail.ā€ Hopefully, these first steps on the trail will bring these students back for more.

Hunting for Answers: Ms. Kelly and Ms. Moss's 7th-grade math students were on the hunt for answers during CAMO DAY! Dressed head-to-toe in camo, our Cavaliers blended in while solving problems, searching for clues, and showing off their math skills. From solving problems to tracking down hidden answers, these students proved that math is not only about numbers, it's about teamwork, strategy, and a little bit of adventure.

Damascus Middle School welcomed the second presenter of the year to Career
CafƩ on September 24. Dr. Mark Hainsworth from Emory and Henry University
came to talk with students about the fields of engineering and engineering
education. He informed students about the many types of engineering
specializations and the personal characteristics that might lead students to consider
careers in engineering or education. He challenged students to notice their own
engineering mindsets any time they notice a problem and think about ways to solve
it both in school and their daily lives.

Unplug Challenge: Jeff McCoy visited DMS to talk with students about their digital footprints and the importance of stepping away from social media’s unrealistic portrayals and constant comparison mentality. He shared a powerful message: ā€œYour life is not going to be valuable until you value it first,ā€ encouraging them to choose real life over what is found online. His challenge to students for the week ahead…do something other than social media for three hours every afternoon.

Damascus Middle School is gearing up for something BIG!

Thanks to our friends from Communities In Schools of Appalachian Highlands and a grant from Outride’s Riding for Focus program, DMS now has 30 brand-new bikes and helmets to launch a school-wide cycling program!

Students, families, and community members came together at the Bike Build Bash to pump tires, grease pedals, and get these bikes ready to roll — with a little expert help from Sun Dog Outfitters.

This 6-week cycling program will give students the chance to boost their mental and physical health, build confidence, strengthen friendships, and discover the joy of riding.
